CITP Reading Group: Works in Progress (WiP): Sarah Scheffler – Content Moderation Under End-to-End Encryption

Date:
Wednesday, October 26, 2022
Time:
11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Location

008 Sherrerd Hall

Sarah Scheffler is a postdoctoral research fellow at CITP whose work examines content moderation under end-to-end encryption from technical, legal, and policy perspectives.

Take a governance challenge that is already incredibly difficult – like moderating the content people send to each other online – and then add encryption.  This creates a host of new challenges on top of an already difficult problem.  Technically, what new methods are needed to govern under encryption?  What are the policy implications for using these technical methods?  And, continuing the cycle, can those policy difficulties be mitigated with technology?  In this talk I will demonstrate how my work tackles these challenges in three areas: the policy of content moderation under encryption, the law of compelled decryption, and the applied cryptography that makes these improvements possible.

The CITP Works in Progress (WiP) Seminar meets weekly during the semester. This reading group is open to any Princeton affiliate, including faculty, staff and undergraduate and graduate students.
