The internet was supposed to unify us … but has that happened? In a world filled with cyber hacks, communication silos and government surveillance, can liberty really survive the digital age?

This forum will explore digital technologies in the information age, with a careful eye to how different countries and sectors approach the balance between risks, benefits and fundamental rights. Topics include privacy and human rights vs. security; vulnerabilities vs. efficiencies posed by the Internet of Things; communication silos vs. unfiltered information; access (denied) to information; and a vision for global cooperation.

Digital technology pervades citizens’ daily lives in both positive and negative ways – from connecting people around the world to exposing them to hacked campaigns, uncensored fake news, social media hate speech and government access to private digital information. It is imperative to step back and consider how we can govern the Information Society in a way that truly serves a worldwide interest.

Keynote Speakers:

Vinton Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist Google
Brad Smith, President and Chief Legal Officer, Microsoft
Neelie Kroes, Former Vice President and Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, European Commission
Roger Dingledine, Co-Founder, Project Leaders, Research Director, The Tor Project

Topics include:

  • balancing privacy and human rights with security
  • the Internet of Things (IoT); communication silos
  • access (denied) to information
  • a vision for global cooperation
