In security, it is often the case that a system’s weakest links are those relating to physical security; we can design a nearly impenetrable digital security system while the door to the room it sits in is unlocked. A large part of physical security education is learning about the most oft-employed security device — locks — and defeating them.

In that vein, CITP has invited invited Schuyler Towne, a professional lockpicker and physical security trainer, to come speak about lock forensics and lead two workshops on the basics of lock-based physical security. These events will focus on evaluating claims about a given lock’s security and analyzing how much protection a lock can give us against adversaries with basic knowledge of picking locks.

Schuyler will cover several different locking concepts, from the well known Pin Tumbler to the Finnish Disc Detainer lock. Tools will be available for anyone to use and there will be plenty of practice locks. Additional topics that will be covered include security pin picking, regional sidebar vulnerabilities in high security locks and various key based attacks.
