Etienne Maury from the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL) and Estelle Masse from Access Now will provide an overview of the functioning of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) almost one year in. This conversation will reflect on the law’s negotiation and recent enforcement process, present some of its novelty and also potential shortcomings. Topics will include international data transfers, individuals’ rights, impact on economy and business models, fines and companies’ attitude towards data protection.

Estelle Masse, Senior Policy Analyst and Global Data Protection Lead, Access Now

Access Now is an international NGO that defends and extends the digital rights of users at risk around the world. The organisation was actively involved in the negotiations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation and advocates for the passage of comprehensive privacy and data protection frameworks globally, including in the US.

Etienne Maury, Legal and Policy Officer, CNIL, European and International Affairs Department

CNIL is the French Data Protection Authority. It is an independent administrative authority founded in 1978, responsible for supervising and enforcing the application of the data protection regulatory framework in France, providing guidance for companies’ compliance and helping individuals to control their personal data and exercise their rights. Together with all 29 EU data protection authorities, gathered within the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), the CNIL is in charge of the enforcement of the GDPR and recently applied a 57-million dollars fine to Google for breach of the law.
