Wikipedia and similar collaborative technologies have begun to influence the ways that people understand and influence the world.

Representatives from the Wikimedia Foundation will discuss the policies and principles that govern the operations of the Wikipedia community, along with new efforts to make Wikipedia more relevant to governance, debate, and teaching in the broader world of public policy. How are wiki disputes handled? What do the wiki guidelines of “be bold” and “so fix it” mean? What opportunities do professors have to incorporate wiki editing in their curricula? What is the Wikimedia Public Policy Initiative doing on Princeton’s campus this year? Several Princeton faculty members will offer their reflections on these questions and others.

Wikimedia Foundation Presenters’ Bios:

Pete Forsyth is the Wikimedia Foundation’s Public Outreach Officer. He works with Wikimedia’s vast network of volunteers and supporters to improve the experience of new project contributors. He began writing Wikipedia articles as a volunteer in 2006, focusing on the history of his home state of Oregon. He helped found WikiProject Oregon, a dynamic group of Wikipedians which coordinates collaborative projects and coordinates with local institutions. Prior to joining the Wikimedia Foundation staff in 2009, Pete provided communication services to non-profit, business, and political clients, and worked for several news organizations.

Annie L. Lin is the Wikimedia Foundation’s Campus Team Coordinator. As a member of the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative team, her roles include: working with university professors to incorporate Wikipedia-editing into their classes; forming and building a team of “Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors” (made up of students, staff, and local Wikipedians) who can support the participating professors on Wikipedia-related questions; reaching out to university campuses across the country to encourage them to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool; and enhancing the sustainability and scalability of the Public Policy Initiative. Annie holds a degree in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley, where she conducted extensive qualitative research particularly on labor and workplace issues.
