Due to close ties between media owners and government officials, in many recent cases the Turkish media has failed to deliver newsworthy data to the public. This latest inclination on the part of the media to apply self-censorship has led passive news consumers to be active content producers, especially during the Gezi Park protests. By curating and developing verification methods for the content created by thousands of citizens without any journalistic background, 140journos has created a communication network for citizens trying to have their voice heard. This network has now become Turkey’s most trusted citizen media outlet.

Within the scope of the talk, Engin Önder and Zeynep Tüfekçi will break down the tools and verification methods used during the Gezi Park protests and the pitfalls of the broadcast.

Bios:

Engin Önder is the president and co-founder of Institute of Creative Minds, an Istanbul-based network of creative professionals. Onder scrutinizes the changing habits of news consumption and production through @140journos, the largest network and organized structure for citizen journalism in Turkey. Onder also develops art, design, culture and media projects for physical and digital public spaces.

Zeynep Tufekci is an assistant professor at UNC and a fellow at Princeton CITP.
